Lawn Bowls

Control, Balance and Precision

Programme Objective

Students will develop safe bowl handling, a balanced delivery stance, controlled release, reading the bowl's bias, judging line and weight, and simple end scoring. Practice develops repeated controlled stepping and delivery, leg stability, trunk balance, coordinated arm action and supervised walking between ends.

Active tasks build physical competence and confidence in a safe setting. Students practise self discipline, fair play, cooperation and respect through shared routines and feedback.

Programme Description

The course progresses from baseline checks and demonstrations to repeated practice, applied tasks and a final skills challenge. Use small supervised groups and meaningful turns. Increase difficulty only when students demonstrate control; add staff where separate activity areas require supervision.

How Each 60-Minute Session Runs

Every session follows the same predictable structure, so students settle quickly into safe routines. Water and recovery breaks are included within practice.

5'

Readiness checks

Attendance, footwear and equipment checks, venue inspection and safety signals established before any bowl is picked up.

8'

Movement warm up

Mobility and balance work for legs, trunk and shoulders, plus controlled stepping practice to prepare for delivery.

12'

Demonstration & skill practice

Coach demonstration of the session focus, followed by guided practice in small supervised groups with meaningful turns.

25'

Active tasks

Applied practice towards targets and jacks, with retrieval only after every bowl stops. Water and recovery breaks are included.

5'

Assessment

The learning check for the session is observed and recorded, with individual feedback given.

5'

Cool down & reflection

Gentle cool down and a short discussion of what improved and one focus for the next session.

Programme 1 Session Descriptions

Eight progressive 60-minute sessions, each building on the last.

1

Safe handling and first rolls

Identify delivery, waiting and retrieval zones. Practise carrying a suitable bowl and making a gentle roll towards a nearby jack. Record a short baseline task and alternate turns with supervised stepping and balance practice.

Learning check: Follow the stop and retrieval signals and complete three safe, controlled rolls.

2

Balanced stance and release

Practise a comfortable stance, small controlled step and smooth release close to the surface. Use an individually suitable standing or supported delivery position. Partners identify one balance cue while staying outside the bowl path.

Learning check: Repeat three deliveries with a stable finish and identify one useful technique cue.

3

Discover the bowl's bias

Observe how the marked bias changes a bowl's curved path. Practise forehand and backhand lines towards wide target channels, changing orientation under coach guidance. Compare intended and actual paths without increasing delivery force.

Learning check: Identify the bias side and demonstrate a controlled roll using each chosen line.

4

Judge weight and distance

Roll towards jacks at two suitable distances on the same practice lane. Compare a short bowl with one that passes the target and adjust the delivery weight. Keep retrieval separate from active delivery and continue balance tasks between turns.

Learning check: Choose a suitable delivery weight and explain one adjustment after observing the outcome.

5

Combine line and weight

Choose an aiming line before each roll and try to finish near the jack. Change one element at a time after feedback. Use wider target zones or shorter distances where needed and retain controlled surface-level releases.

Learning check: Send three of five bowls into a suitable target zone and explain the chosen line.

6

Ends, measuring and scoring

Play short ends with equal turns and a small agreed number of bowls. Wait until all bowls stop before deciding which are closest. Practise careful coach-supported measuring and agree the score before collecting equipment.

Learning check: Identify the scoring side and correctly record a sample end with support where needed.

7

Pairs communication and decisions

Play adapted pairs rounds with a shared target and rotating discussion roles. Students suggest a line or weight change and listen to their partner's view. Keep active practice stations available between short games and recognise honest scoring.

Learning check: Contribute a useful team decision, follow turn-taking routines and acknowledge another player's effort.

8

Skill festival and progress review

Repeat the original target task using the same distance and equipment. Play balanced short ends and compare delivery control, target choice and respectful teamwork. Students identify a personal improvement and a safe routine they can explain to others.

Learning check: Demonstrate an improved delivery and explain the bias, an end score and one safety rule.

Safety & Playing Rules

Rules and safe delivery

  • Introduce the jack, biased delivery, alternate turns, ends and agreed scoring after all bowls stop.
  • The scoring side counts bowls nearer the jack than the opponent's nearest bowl.
  • Use shortened rinks, fewer bowls and short games as stated learning adaptations.
  • Deliver from the marked mat and wait for the previous bowl to stop.
  • Agree the score before moving bowls; the coach supports measuring and resolves uncertainty.

Equipment and bowls

  • Match bowl size and weight to each student's comfortable grip and control.
  • Roll close to the surface; no lofting or forceful driving shots.
  • Keep students clear of all bowl paths and retrieve only after every bowl stops and the coach gives the signal.
  • Do not stop moving bowls with feet or hands.
  • Keep fingers clear when collecting bowls and carry one bowl at a time; adults move equipment containers.

Before every session

  • Inspect the venue and equipment, confirm attendance and readiness, establish stop signals and identify first aid and emergency access.
  • Adjust work and rest to the group.
  • Stop for pain, distress, unsafe behaviour or unsuitable conditions; record incidents and inform the school.
  • Follow the school weather, heat and lightning procedures for outdoor delivery.
